So I will be graduating next may with a bachelors degree in law enforcement, but due to the fact that there are no law enforcement jobs available and I've always had driving in the back of my mind I figure now would be a good chance to drive otr for awhile. But all I hear from family and friends when I tell them I want to drive instead of being a cop right out of college is that I wasted four years and a lot of money getting a degree when I'm not going to be a cop at the moment. It is still an option to me later down the road but for now I think trucking would be a good thing to get into. I'm almost 21 with no kids or a wife so home time isn't all that important, but do you guys think it would be a waste to go be a trucker now that I have a degree?

If trucking is what you want to do, then go for it. I myself graduated from college with Accounting and Business Administation degree and just started workin on my Masters. However, I realized that I was no longer happy doing what I was currently doing. I do have the support of my wife, parents, and in-laws.
If they really cared about you, they would support you. Good luck and reach for the skies!

I'm close friends with folks who have degrees in one field and now work in another. Naturally, we've talked about the irony. Not one of them feels the degree or the learning that went with it were wasted. It was just another part of their overall education in life, and it informs their world views. Two of them went back for second degrees and now work in those fields.
Looking back, if I were you, I'd go trucking, maybe for awhile or maybe for long-term if I liked it enough.
Good question. BOL. Congratulations on your degree.

Do what you want. I've met drivers with genius-level IQs, masters degrees, and even one with a PhD who just couldn't resist the call of the road that has sucked in so many of us. I don't drive a truck because I can't do anything else; I do it because I don't want to do anything else.

have an M.Ed in Education (1994), two BAS degrees (Criminal Justice (1990) and Psychology (1991)), and got into trucking (the second time) when a lawfirm gig got screwed up due to some newbie lawyers in our MD office...
Don't expect extra pay, but the college time helps your reading comprehension!
I enjoy driving, always looking to improve things, solve problems, like how to make up for a driver being a jerk to a shipping clerk that I now have to deal with... and get loaded sometime today...
Don't let your mouth overload your butt, don't let it write checks that your body can't cash... because if you're disrespectful to someone who may have an 8th grade education, they're not going to ask if you have a degree before they whoop you.
