Russia in the early 80s

Сообщение Discoverer » 23 июн 2010, 23:00

Alexander Kalion, «RUSSIANS. Province In The Early Eighties».

In my opinion these are very real racy photos. These are Russian people of early 80s, right before the collapse of USSR. Some of those pictures could have been taken also in todays Russian countryside, there things really have not changed so much as in the cities. Everyday life of a Russian person, especially in the countryside, has always been a constant struggle and survival, lives of many Russian people were very hard and some serious concern has become a constant expression of their faces.

Author's note:
The author does not claim a widespread investigation of the “mysterious Russian soul” in this album. The photos which were taken in the early eighties of the past century in a small district center and in its rural area environs bear the deep personal attitude of the author to the life’s peculiarities of that time period.

The tiny splinter of that reality, this album will not show you many and many elements of the socialist existence, for example: politics, ideology, army, cosmos, greatest construction projects of the century….However, are they characteristic for the Russian out-of-the-way places that live its quiet provincial life? Rather no than yes. We were not in full measure the eye-witnesses of the outstanding transformations and achievements of the advanced socialism. Because of our provincialism we were not even the dissidents. And I, as an amateur photographer, wanted at that time to find the true images of people which were living around me. I wanted without the superfluous complexities, without the jaundice and hypocrisy to capture in them their basic, true, though not always sound features which tie together the generations of the Russian people. Let the viewer looking through the album take the author’s irony not as an end in itself, but as an element of the subject’s decor; after all, in those years of the half-truth the only protection against the lie was exactly the irony.

To date my long-standing wish is being fulfilled. Whether successfully or not – You will estimate. 25 years have passed since that time. As the saying goes – some things are more visible from a distance.

Sincerely yours, Alexander Kalion.

Matroskin, I think you just do not understand the idea of the author. But, unfortunately, I cannot run the gamut of the emotions in words. This is no disgrace to Russia. Just the beauty of these photos must feel. Maybe it's grotesque, and it's beautiful.

Matroskin. Most likely, you wouldn't like the new station of the Moscow metro Dostoevskaya. I, in turn, think it masterpiece. Part of the mosaic in my avatar, incidentally.

I agree with Matroskin, they took the gloomiest pictures of Russians, adding that black and white photos look more depressing. It wasn't all like that in the 80's.
Discovery, I thought that avatar of yours seemed familiar. Although personally I don't like the design of the new Dostoyevskaya metro station. It may be a good piece of art work, but I wouldn't like to view those pictures with axes everyday if I was a commuter of that metro station

That is not an art, but demonstrating of the despair in communist Russia. I am interesting how much money did he get from this "art"?

I like those photos, at least they do not make me angry. They seem actually pretty ‘real’ to me and it is a part of our history. I do not think they were artificially dramatized.

In the early and late 80s I spent most of my summers (and sometimes even winters) in Russian villages with my relatives (mostly in the north of Krasnoyarsk region). My grandmother had 10 brothers and 5 sisters! So I got a good idea of how people used to live in rural villages in those years.
I remember how we went to rinse linen on the ice cold river with my mother; there wasn’t any water system in the village and the water had to be taken from the well; you would always see a horse by a monocycle on the street; rubber boots and “fufaika” was a part of routine dressing during rainy and chilly season… etc. I think it’s been always tough to live in a village and to be a farmer. Nowadays it’s become better since many new technologies and machinery are more affordable.

But let’s be honest to ourselves – 80’s were hard years and many people were very poor, especially those who lived in the villages far from any regional centers.

great photos! thank you very much! it's so close to me, I had a few moments of nostalgia. I was born is such a place and spend my youthful in this environment in the 80s. it’s really very close and for me it’s beautiful. Maybe most of you won’t understand it, but I think it’s a very great job; the author could get the real picture, real people, real atmosphere and emotions of that moment of life and nature of those people. I think those people was not bad, and especially the women of that time were really heroes, but the atmosphere of lies and destruction made them some depressive. But those grandmothers really were great! they had gone through the war, through a lot of huge difficulties and problems, and kept a lot of moral power and character, I remember that.

Maybe that’s why Russian girls are most beautiful women in the world, but our babushkas are most ugly:))) Russian women always kept a lot of challenges.

Man, I love these pictures! There's some drama of that time in them though wouldn't say they are sad or smth. I was just a little kid in early 80's but feel about that time exactly this way. Thank you. Cool stuff.
