http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000142 ... Carousel_1

.. were never allowed to do:
• attend a sleepover
• have a playdate
• be in a school play
• complain about not being in a school play
• watch TV or play computer games
• choose their own extracurricular activities
• get any grade less than an A
• not be the No. 1 student in every subject except gym and drama
• play any instrument other than the piano or violin
• not play the piano or violin.

One thing I haven't seen discussed here is the issue of TIME. Did anyone notice how much time the Chinese mothers spend with their children? Did anyone notice that neither the children nor the parents watch TV or play computer games? I'm willing to bet that Chinese parents and children do not spend hours on the telephone or text messaging, either. So even if Western parents do not want to be so strict and achievement oriented, think of how different your children's lives would be if we all spent lots and lots of quality time with them. No TV, DVDs, computer games, or text messaging for EITHER parents or children. Instead spend time together on school work. Play music and sports together. Read out loud to each other. Enact short plays together. Paint the living room and plant a garden together. The difference between the Eastern way and the Western way is QUALITY TIME.
